With a total of 24 universities and 12 research institutions, Cologne is one of the most important and innovative science centres in Germany and at the heart of Europe.
Cologne is home to 11 universities with faculties of health and medicine, the University Hospital Cologne and renowned research institutions (such as the Max Planck Institutes and the German Aerospace Centre) that conduct internationally recognised basic and cutting-edge research in health and life sciences.

Cologne is one of the top locations for research into ageing processes and age-associated diseases, for medical space research, for genetic research and much more. And with its cutting-edge medicine, the University Hospital of Cologne covers the entire spectrum from molecular medicine to clinical application.

Centre of excellence for tumour research

The West German Tumour Centre (WTZ) in Essen and the Centre for Integrated Oncology (CIO) in Cologne cooperate in the National Centre for Tumour Diseases West. The two centres of excellence in oncology at the university hospitals in Essen and Cologne link all six university hospitals in North Rhine-Westphalia via the ‘NRW Network of Excellence in Cancer Medicine’. This ensures that the more than 18 million people living in Germany’s most populous state have direct access to research into the latest diagnostic and treatment procedures at the NCT.
